Shaney jo Darden’s Guide to a Non Toxic Summer

After a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, designer and artist Shaney jo Darden founded the global non-profit organization The Keep A Breast Foundation (KAB) to raise awareness of breast cancer and to encourage prevention and early detection among young people.

Now, as KAB celebrates its 15th anniversary, Shaney jo is a leading voice in the cultural conversation about breast cancer and her visionary youth targeted campaigns and programs featuring irreverent messaging, inventive art, cutting edge pop culture and technology are fueling a paradigm shift among non-profit organizations. The iconic “i love boobies” message, one of KAB’s signature breast cancer outreach and awareness programs, has become a generational staple for the young people she’s reached.

The Keep A Breast Foundation has three core programs, Non Toxic Revolution,Traveling Education Booth and Treasured Chest, which promote breast cancer awareness through Art, Education, Awareness and Action. Non Toxic Revolution (NTR) informs, educates and inspires young people to revolt against the dangers of toxic chemicals in their environment and food supply especially those linked to the initiation of breast cancer. We’re thrilled that they’re hosting a NON TOXIC REVOLUTION POOL PARTY at the beach house this unnamedSunday (details below) and are celebrating with Shaney jo’s guide to a non toxic summer:

BPA-Free Klean Kanteen Reflect Water Bottle: While you’re busy reflecting beachside, keep hydrated with Klean Kanteen’s BPA-free “Reflect” water bottle. Not only does it look cool, but it doesn’t contain harmful cancer causing toxins. Check out their insulated food containers — perfect for snacking at the beach.

unnamed-1Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant: Yes, it actually works! Effective under the sweatiest conditions (hot yoga, anyone?), the glass packaging reduces your plastic intake and is made with all natural ingredients, which allows your lymphatic system to do its job and won’t fill your pores with toxins.

unnamed-2Badger Organic and Natural Sunscreen: Summer season sunscreen solutions (say it three times fast!) can be an overwhelming subject. We’re trained to protect our skin from the sun to prevent cancer, but it’s also important to protect yourself from certain ingredients in lotions that could disrupt the hormonal system and boost your risk of skin cancer. When you’re headed out to catch some rays, try a paraben-free sunscreen like this (super affordable) option.

Bare Bones Peppermint Lip Balm: The dreaded dry lipsunnamed-3: it could happen to you! Keep them hydrated with an all natural (and tasty) peppermint and cocoa butter lip balm and face the sun with confidence.

unnamed-4EiR Cooling Butter: After a long day of sand and surf, you (and your muscles) could use a cooldown. EiR caters to an active lifestyle and uses no chemicals, parabens or artificial fragrances. With a refreshing peppermint scent, this balm is the perfect pre-yoga companion to help your muscles warm up, flex and heal faster.

Primal Lifeunnamed-5 Organics Salty Hair Texturizing Spray: Give your hair that “just left the beach” treatment on the rainiest of days. Primal Life’s rose water/sea salt blend is a natural alternative to silicone-based products that can cease the production of your scalp’s natural moisturizers.
