Sonya Sklaroff loves New York City. It’s the place where she works, lives, and gathers daily inspiration. She constantly draws in her sketchbook and photographs the city, and you can often find her with her watercolors perched on a park bench or on a street corner painting feverishly.

What Sklaroff adores most about her city are the places that out-of-town visitors tend to overlook—the hidden gardens, small hole-in-the-wall restaurants, old unassuming buildings, fire escapes, and rooftops. And it’s the unique moments that occur in these places that she captures—a psychic reading a crystal ball in a storefront window, friends meeting in a secret blossoming garden in the springtime, tennis players enjoying a match on an East Side court few know about. These private, unassuming scenes are part of what make New York City so special: the quiet that takes place in a city full of chaos, in the middle of our hurried lives.
