TIM BISKUP –  HANDS

Tim Biskup:

“These used to hurt. I pushed really hard to get those sharp edges. My thumb felt like it was broken.
I tried drawing more lightly but they looked weak and floaty.
Not the tight/loose combo that I look for. Tight edges on loose ideas. Letting it flow.
I made myself a sign thats on the wall in my studio. It says “Keep doing what you’re doing, just don’t worry about it so much”.
“When I paint, I try to destroy any resemblance with any objective reference. But if a resemblance makes itself present a posteriori, it is welcome to stay.” – Gerhard Richter
I love that quote.
This felt like permission to flop around and maybe stop caring so much about what I’m drawing and let it happen.
The commitment to draw a series of hands put all of that aside.
It felt like a limitation at first, but then I realized that I was thinking even less about flopping around and what that says about me and what was left were the drawings.
Less mind, more moment. Now only graphite memories.”

Johan Kugelberg:

“As I am looking at all these exemplary drawings, I can’t help but think  how jazzy they are: be-bop, hard-bop, free, the lines are flowing in a way  that makes you think music. Jackie McLean. Pharoah Sanders.  You feel that each image was improvised, a straight line from the heart that is also crooked and spontaneous.”
