10 QUESTIONS: Andrea Shapiro

Though we recently lost her to the West Coast, we still think of artist Andrea Shapiro as a local and treated her as such with our 10 question requirement before her work is displayed at the Montauk Beach House later this month.

LT: What’s your deal?Stripes 1, 2015-08-20-006

AS: I’m a minimal abstract painter, DJ, and surfer. I recently left the East End and moved to Venice, California where I am enjoying life with my new puppy, Friday (@mybuddyfriday).

LT: Why Montauk?

AS: I love its raw, natural beauty,  the surf and my amazing friends that live there!

LT: Long or short?

AS: In between.

LT: In your opinion – what is the best, or worst, thing about Montauk?

AS: Best: small town charm and sense of community.  Worst: winter isolation (if you’re a local), otherwise an isolated winter weekend getaway is fabulous 🙂

LT: Low Tide or High Time?totem 1 Shapiro-2015-08-20-010

AS: Low Tide.

LT: What is your favorite place to eat – or drink – in Montauk?

AS: Crow’s Nest. I always feel like I’m away on a tropical vacation when I’m there. Great vibe.

LT: If you could instantly realize one wish, what would it be?

AS: To have a solo show in a major museum.

LT/AS: Before I sleep I always _brush my teeth_.

LT: Favorite artist? Why?

AS: Chuck Close – because I worked for him for two years and really got to know him. He is one of the most brilliant, interesting, talented, driven and coolest humans I have ever met. I’m also inspired by Brice Marden, Cy Twombly and Richard Diebenkorn.

LT/AS: I love to _surf_ because it _keeps me connected to nature, beats the gym any day and makes me happier than I’ve ever been_.
